Which BBQ restaurant in Austin is better - Stubb's or Salt Lick?
I ate at Salt Lick tonight (the one in Round Rock), for the first time. If you're from the area, you know I've heard it was good. But, I was disappointed, from the limited menu all the way to the pickles and onions. The only thing I really liked was the beans and the beer. Even the fork didn't seem to work very well.
Anyway, I've never been to Stubb's, but I see they have good entertainment. Cake played there, and I believe the Psychedelic Furs did too.
If you don't mind my saying so, the problem is that you didn't go to the original Salt Lick in Driftwood. While their bbq may not be the best in Texas, their family-style dining atmosphere is something everyone needs to experience. It is well worth it for you and some friends to load up a cooler full of beer, head down south, and feast for a couple of hours.
As for Stubb's, the man made great rubs and marinades, but the bbq there has always been hit or miss for me. However, as another poster mentioned, their sides (green tomatoes, spinach, etc.) have always been good.
While neither Stubb's nor Salt Lick would be my first choices for bbq, I would have to give a slight edge to the original Salt Lick in Driftwood.
Now, I am going to give you a list of some other BBQ spots around town that I enjoy. I will present them in no particular order and will try to provide a brief overview of each locations' specialties.
* The Green Mesquite - Good all-around bbq for any occasion. They have especially good brisket.
* Rudy's - It is a Texas chain and is known for its smoked turkey, chopped beef, and of course, the sauce.
* Ben's Long Branch - This is a classic East Austin experience. Great chicken, ribs and brisket. ***update*** The name has changed, but it is still in the same location and still uses Ben's great recipes.
* Artz Rib House - The name says it all. Get the large order of their country style ribs. (this is one of my favs)
* Chief's BBQ - A great little hole-in-the-wall in South Austin that has good all-around offerings, and their sauce is very different and very good.
* Iron Works BBQ - Good all-around bbq and their specialty is beef ribs.
*County Line - pretty good all-around bbq and their specialty is smoked turkey. They use to offer great homemade bread, too. (this one is not my favorite, but others seem to like it)
* Uncle Billy's Brew and Cue - This is still a fairly new and fairly trendy place that not only serves bbq but also makes home brew. I have yet to visit myself, but several friends have tried it and liked it.
* There are also many great and historic bbq joints within an hour's drive of Austin, so I would definitely recommend making some road trips to any of these places:
Lockhart, TX - Blacks BBQ, Kreuz BBQ, and Smitty's Market
Llano, TX - Laird's and Inman's
Mason, TX - Cooper's (this is the original - Llano and Marble Falls have one, too).
Elgin, TX - Southside Market
Seguin, TX - Davila's
Taylor, TX - Taylor Cafe
Belton, TX - Schoepf's
Waco - Vitek's
I hope this helps; happy eating!
