Is Mahogany used to make violins?
Well... I was a bit curious. My beginner violin's back doesn't look like spruce or maple at all... It's a bit of dark-ish brown, like mahogany.
I've seen negative feedbacks about 'violins made of mahogany' and they don't even exist...
I wanna know my violin's wood... It's dark brown with straight black/dark lines... What type of wood is this?
Thank you...
This is my violin's back... Any suggestions what wood could this be?

Well...?
So... what type of wood is it? Is it cheap maple, spruce, etc.?
Mahogany is a tonewood and is sometimes used for violins, though because of the way it grows it's more difficult to find pieces of mahogany that are suitable for a violin and the wood is more expensive than maple and spruce.
If this is a student violin I would be very surprised if it were really mahogany. I suspect that it's just a different varnish or possibly flaring.
If you can provide a link to a picture of the violin I can identify the wood.
EDIT:
Definitely not mahogany. Mahogany has a darker brown color and tighter grain. Depending on what part of the tree is used, the varnish and the kind of cut you can get different patterns and colors. You can tell by the line down the middle of the back that this is a quarter sawn cut, rather than a single piece of wood for the back. The effect on your violin is just a result of the particular varnish and grain pattern of the wood.
