How big should a baby quilt be?
I am using this fabric: http://www.box.net/shared/guyupbllyx (curious george)
with a solid red fleece for the back.
I have green and yellow fat quarters and was planning to cut out the monkeys in squares and do a monkey, a yellow block, a green block, a monkey, a yellow block, a green block, etc....
how many blocks across (how big should these blocks be?)
and how many blocks down.
I have never done this before so I am sticking with basic block structure but dont know the dimensions I'm supposed to aim for.
I usually make them somewhere between 36-45" on a side... sometimes square, sometimes rectangular.
I can't see the fabric you've chosen --- is it also a fleece? Mixing knits (like fleece) and wovens (like quilting cotton prints) is tricky business... the fleece wants to stretch. Typical quilts are made with a woven cotton face fabric, often made of patches, and woven back, with a batting inside.
How big are the monkeys? That will somewhat control the size of the patches.
Remember, if you're sewing 1/4" seams* (pretty standard for quilts), if a block is going to finish 6" square, it needs to start at 6.5" square when cut -- you'll "lose" 1/4" all the way around the block as it's sewn.

(*typically, I sew baby quilts with 3/8" (1 cm) seam allowances... it makes for a sturdier quilt... so for my example of 6" blocks finished, I'd need to cut 6 3/4" squares to start with.)
