I just got a new wooden rolling pin. Do I have to do anything to it before I use it?
I have never had a wooden kitchen tool before except wooden spoons, and those left little wood fibres in the food I stirred with them. (I used them that one time then threw them out.) I don't want that to happen with my rolling pin. Should I treat or 'season' it in some way? It seems to be just sanded raw wood. I thought it would be shellacked or coated in some way. I am using it to roll out cookies that I plan to give as gifts, so I don't want anything to go wrong. I just got it last night, and I'm baking today, so quick replies are most apprecited! Thanks!
You can rub some vegetable oil in if you'd like. Rolling pins are never given a hard finish like shellac or varnish. Imagine the mess if that flaked off and got into your food!
